Answers for Science CA1 (2006) Here are the answers to the homework. I have added the explanations so that you can revise for your exam. That is why the answers were posted a bit later. 1. ( 4 ) Fungus cannot move freely by themselves. 2. ( 2 ) Lesser seeds, lesser competition. So the stem's diameter will be bigger and the height shorter as there is no need to compete for sunlight. If there are many seeds, they will compete for sunlight and thus they will be thinner (smaller diameter) and taller. 3. ( 1 ) The root hairs will reach towards water in the ground. 4. ( 2 ) Heat and light is given out BUT only LIGHT energy is taken in for photosynthesis. 5. ( 3 ) Plants with non-green leaves also undergo photosynthesis so food is also produced and stored as starch. At noon, there is more light energy so more food is produced. 6. ( 1 ) All living things carry out respiration so 'A' cannot. Some plants reproduce by spores (e.g. ferns) so 'B' cannot. Not all plants have flowers so 'C' cannot. Only plants make food so 'D' is the answer. 7. ( 3 ) The process is called Respiration. 8. ( 4 ) Wood is not translucent so (1) is out. Frosted glass is not transparent so (2) is out. Tracing paper is not opagie so (3) is out. 9. ( 2 ) Steel box is not a poor conductor of heat so (1) is out. Glass box is not magnetic so (3) is out. Styrofoam box is not a good conductor of heat so (4) is out. 10. ( 3 ) You need to consider whether the heat can pass through X to cook the food and whether it will move up Y such that it burns your hands. 11. ( 4 ) Only materials tested should be different. 12. ( 3 ) You know that glass is fragile and cannot conduct electricity so only (3) is possible. 13. ( 1 ) From the graph, B moves twice of A. Which means B turns twice for A to turn once. The gear ration is 2:1. Option 1 is the answer as A has 16 teeth and B has 8 teeth. 14. ( 4 ) Chemical Potential --> Heat --> Kinetic (of steam)--> electrical 15. ( 4 ) X (water), Y (wind), Z (split) 16. ( 2 ) A-B: Melting. B-E:Evaporation. E onwards: Boiling and Evaporation 17. ( 3 ) Volume increases so the can will also move upwards as it will float. The marking on the bucket shoul not move. 18. ( 1 ) B is wrong as BOTH plants will store excess sugar. D is wrong becaus the youg plant grows from suckers. 19. ( 1 ) Fertilisation has not yet taken place. 20. ( 4 ) Best conductor will cause the wax to melt faster 21. ( 2 ) From the answers, you can see that only (2) is possible. 22. ( 3 ) Evaporation is the process where the LIQUID (not solid) state of water chages to the gaseous state. 23. ( 3 ) (2) is out as green plants don't make Water. (4) is out as Gas P does not make Water. (1) is out s water vapour is not the most abundant gas. 24. ( 4 ) For hot water, the water vapour will condense on the cooler surface of the METAL LID (inside) For the Ice, water vapour from the SURROUNDING AIR outside the beaker will condense on the cooler surface of the metal lid and beaker (outside) 25. ( 2 ) To be explained in class 26. ( 4 ) No change in temperature so no heat loss. 27. ( 3 ) Answer can be seen from the results on the table. 28. ( 2 ) Venus is further away than Mercury but it is hotter than Mercury. 29. ( 2 ) Helium is lighter than AIR so will move upwards. Carbon Dioxide is heavier than AIR so will move downwards. 30. ( 3 ) When the metal BALL S loses more heat, more heat will be gained by the water. That is why the water in A becomes hotter. Study Hard for the final CA1 paper! Mr K |
